Lighting Science Group Corporation, a developer and integrator of intelligent LED lighting solutions, today announced that on October 7, 2008, the Superior Court of California for Sacramento County issued a preliminary injunction against Philips Solid State Lighting Solutions, Inc., Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. and Philips Electronics North America Corporation (collectively “Philips”) preventing Philips from using or relying on certain confidential or trade secret information obtained from LSG. In granting the motion for a preliminary injunction sought by LSG, the court found that LSG was “likely to prevail on the merits” in its action pending against Philips. The action began in March 2008 when LSG filed a complaint in the Superior Court of California for Sacramento County alleging, among other things, that Philips had misappropriated confidential information and engaged in unfair trade practices.

We have an update to a 7 On Your Side investigation into a Peninsula furniture store that abruptly closed.
This is a story that is getting stranger by the moment.
When Bay Area Sofa closed, consumers were angry they’d been left holding the bag.
An empty space in a Burlingame industrial park used to house the store.
Many consumers say they paid for furniture and got nothing in return but excuses.
“I bought a sofa, a sectional, and a ottoman and I paid them $2814.50 in a personal check,” said Jennifer Tagorda, San Francisco. “If you paid a personal check or cash then, yeah, you get a discount.” Read more »

Home sales are slow, and furniture retailers are feeling the pinch. So is this a good time to launch a new furniture empire?
Joe Carron thinks so. He and partner Anand Patel plan to turn a Brandon’s Home Furnishings store in Wellington into a SoHo Living warehouse store.
The pair also has taken over an existing SoHo Living store on Clematis Street in West Palm Beach. Right now the store’s focus is sleek, contemporary furniture for small-scale homes, such as condos. But Carron and Patel plan to expand the store’s offerings, too.
Expanding a furniture business now seems risky. After all, the housing market is expected to get worse before it gets better, and experts predict an uptick is still a couple of years away. Already, there are casualties in the furniture industry: Earlier this year, veteran retailer Modernage closed its doors after 67 years in business.
But Carron and Patel, who are not affiliated with Brandon’s, have a strategy they think will overcome the market. Read more »

The Bombay Furniture Co. of Canada has joined its American parent company in receiving court protection from creditors.
The retailer’s Canadian division said Friday it has obtained an Ontario Superior Court order under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act.
Bombay Furniture said its stores remain open for business as usual, and employee salaries and benefits will continue to be paid during the reorganization process.
The Fort Worth, Texas-based parent company made similar assurances as it filed Thursday under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.
“With a tremendous talent pool and an excellent selection of high-quality home accessories and furnishings, we are confident that our business will emerge from this process stronger and more competitive,” stated CEO David Stewart.
Bombay Furniture said GE Corporate Lending and GE Canada Finance Holding will provide US$115 million in debtor-in-possession financing, of which up to $15 million will be available to the Canadian operation.
The Texas court filing said Bombay Furniture had US$239.4 million in assets and $173.4 million in debts as of May 5.
The company has been losing money for three years, with a loss of US$15.4 million in its latest quarter.
