Furniture company takes new name to reflect past
A Santa Fe company has turned to a word for skilled woodworkers who came to New Mexico from Spain in the 1500s to rebrand itself.
Taos Furniture is now Carpinteros to reflect the company’s work in constructing custom, hand-built, hand-finished furniture. The firm uses local woods, such as Ponderosa Pine, and is one of the few woodshops preserving New Mexico’s history of furniture design and craftsmanship. Read more »

Furniture store goes underground
What better place to show contemporary furniture than one of the most unique retail spaces in the city?
By Design Direct has opened in the Interstate Caves at the southeast corner of Interstate 435 and 23rd Street. With their curved walls and lack of windows, the caves give a futuristic background to the inventory — sofas, dining room sets, bathroom vanities, bedroom furniture and more.
Henrik Svendsen closed his Danish Inspirations in Overland Park in mid-2004. He is now concentrating on the import side of the business and is supplying the store. Peter Kristensen, a former manager at Danish Inspirations, is now sales manager at By Design Direct. Between them they have more than 40 years of experience in the furniture business.
The Reeder Family Trust, which has owned the caves for 30 years, also owns the new 30,000-square-foot store. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays; and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. It is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Read more »

KU professor weaves culture, care into award-winning furniture and sculpture
When Tom Huang looks at a chair, he doesn’t just see a place to sit.
He sees an intimate object that connects everyone who has ever rested there, waited there, dreamed there. He imagines the sentimental value it might hold for a family. He senses the hands of the artisan who crafted its legs and seat and back.
Once in a while, he also recalls a little step stool he created in third grade.
“I cobbled this thing from pieces of lumber that my dad had sitting around that already had a groove cut in them. I put a board in there, and so the idea was that you could sit on it and put your shoes on the board,†says Huang, assistant professor of industrial design at Kansas University. “In some ways I was already thinking about the ritual of getting dressed, and how can an object enable that ritual. Teacher switches gears to colorful furniture
Visitors to Wadoo Furniture Co. will encounter a selection of furniture unlike any other in Fort Collins. That’s exactly the way owner Amy Satterfield planned it.
Wadoo Furniture Co., 314 E. Mountain Ave., opened June 1. The store, Satterfield said, sells art furniture crafted and painted by a select few of the nation’s cutting-edge furniture artists.
“I’m looking for everything to be hand-crafted, hand-painted one-of-a-kind pieces,†she said. “I’m looking for a lot of color.â€
Satterfield’s 500–square-foot retail space is packed with eclectic and unusual home furnishings. Satterfield negotiated contracts with many of the artists to maintain exclusive territory for their works. She believes Wadoo offers the best concentration of art furniture to be found in Colorado.
