Wash away the winter from summer furniture

March 23rd, 2008

You didn’t bring the outdoor furniture inside for the winter, or even cover it. Now, your chairs and patio table, even the umbrella, look plug ugly. No need to panic, though. Just give them a good cleaning, maybe even new paint, and they’ll look fresh as spring.

And that requires a variety of brushes – a new, rather than used, toothbrush (stiffer bristles); a small paintbrush with bristles cut down by half, to make them stiffer but not sharper; and a bristle brush with medium bristles. Some experts recommend sharpening a dowel to pick out bits of dirt and debris, but the best tools are already sharpened – the wooden skewers used to make shish kabob. Read more »

Keep your outdoor deck and furniture looking fresh

May 5th, 2007

Our technique for care and cleaning of wood decks is really easy and by using it you’ll enjoy spring — and your deck — a lot more. This is what we do:

First, we wash our deck with good old laundry detergent and water. Experiment with the concentration to see what works best for you. We use half a cup of detergent in a gallon of hot water.

Wet the deck with plain water first. Then, use a garden pump sprayer to apply a plentiful amount of the soapy mixture. Use a stiff brush on a long handle to make scrubbing easier, and scrub away. Read more »

Outdoor furniture is a hot decorating item this year

April 6th, 2007

Carolee Hoth spent $15,000 to $20,000 furnishing the latest room of her west Omaha home: her backyard.

Four swivel chairs surround a low table in a covered area next to the hot tub. On another level, two club chairs and a curved, three-piece sectional wrap around a fire pit.

Cushions in chocolate brown and seafoam blue with matching fringed pillows cover the heavy cast-aluminum furniture frames. The family of five liked the furniture from Mulhall’s so much that they ordered two more chaise lounges and a table for the deck surrounding the pool. Read more »

Tough time for furniture makers

November 17th, 2006

BAGHDAD — Ahmed Abdel Khaliq arranges the palm furniture in his shop yet again, waiting for customers who rarely appear.

Furniture made from cane and palm fronds is one of Iraq’s oldest traditions. Iraqis bought the rattan-style furniture for their homes and gardens. “Wealthy families were our main customers,” says Khaliq, 22.

Today, Iraqis can choose from an endless selection of imported factory-made wood or plastic garden furniture. Few people bother with the more expensive locally made palm furniture.

Khaliq’s family started the shop in the early 1980s. “All our stuff is handmade,” Khaliq says. “We also provided wedding parties with palm decorations and participated in international exhibitions to show the world our traditions,” he says. His shop also sells baskets and mats. Read more »
