Enlarge a small area with dainty furniture

June 3rd, 2007

Do you have a room in your home where you feel as though every time you step into it, it keeps getting smaller and smaller? Nowadays, when purchasing or selling a home, the emphasis is placed on wanting more space. And as we all well know, this cannot always be achieved, especially if you live in an older home. Here are some suggestions to help enlarge your seemingly dwarf-like space.

Be sure that the furnishings you place in the room are properly proportioned to the space. If your sofa or chair takes up half of the room, it will make the room look even smaller. Smaller sofas or chairs that do not have an over-stuffed look will work best. This also applies to any side tables that may look bulky or large. Instead, place dainty furniture in your space. Updating patio furniture takes a little elbow grease

May 28th, 2007

The time has come to move outdoors and set up for barbecues, kids playing in the backyard, gardening — all the good stuff that this time of year brings. So how does your outdoor furniture look?

If you’re like me, you’re probably a bit discouraged. Without proper storage, the larger pieces remained outside; others have been stuffed under the porch to become a cozy nesting ground for furry animals. But don’t despair. With a little elbow grease and some paint, you’ll be sitting pretty in no time.

If you do not have the ability to fix broken slats, ripped wicker and wobbly legs, then recycle the piece for someone else to repair. Read more »

Radford Furniture to close

August 11th, 2006

After more than 30 years working with her husband at Radford Furniture Company, Lallah Smyth’s keen eye for detail and design has been applied to homes throughout the New River Valley and into Northern Virginia and Bristol, Tenn.

Recently, Smyth lent that eye to a smaller project: signs that advertise the furniture store’s “retirement sale.”

While sale signs are often an afterthought in the decision to close a business, Smyth called on a sign painter to make several paper signs that now hang on the Radford Furniture storefront. Read more »

Furniture search simplified with planning

August 6th, 2006

BROWSING FOR furniture can easily overwhelm even the hardiest of shoppers. You’ve decided to buy a new sofa or dining set. You set out on a Saturday ready to buy, but when you get to the furniture showroom, you see so many choices that it is impossible to decide. Or, you see nothing on the floor that is to your liking so you become discouraged and leave with nothing.

Does this sound familiar? If so, perhaps the following tips can help.

-Before you go shopping measure your room to determine the size you are looking for. Most furniture showrooms are very large, making the furniture look relatively small. Be careful — when you get the furniture home it may be too big for your space. Always take your tape measure with you. Read more »
