Retail novice built furniture store chain

September 14th, 2007

Betty Bacon and her husband turned a small mom-and-pop furniture store into a chain of stores with 14 locations throughout Southwest Florida.

Betty Bacon, who died Sept. 4 at age 85, and her husband, Robert, bought Palmer Furniture shortly after moving to Port Charlotte from Fort Myers in 1973.

The family-owned business, which featured moderately priced new and used furniture, expanded with the help of their four grown children.

Betty Bacon remained a fixture at the Port Charlotte store, renamed Bacon’s Furniture, after she and her husband sold the company to one of their sons in 1987 and retired.

For the next 15 years, Betty Bacon continued to regularly drop by on Saturday mornings to mingle with customers and co-workers over coffee and her fresh-baked cookies, said her son, Bill Bacon, of Port Charlotte. Read more »

The Complete Illustrated Guide to Furniture and Cabinet Construction : Book

November 15th, 2006

Taunton\'s Complete Illustrated Guide to Finishing (Complete Illustrated Guide) The second installment in this planned three-volume guide will, no doubt, join the first and third (to be published at the end of this year) in offering woodworkers of all competencies a great set of reference books. More important than words here are the high-quality photographs illustrating each step, especially if there’s no expert or teacher nearby. Former magazine journalist Rae does a creditable job of organizing concepts and contents, and explaining the most technical of terms in plain English. Techniques are presented in a range of skill options, catering to both novice and highly professional craftspeople. Some of the tips on how to save time and money are ingenious; for example, recycling Popsicle sticks and gluing them to sandpaper to clean up tool marks in hard-to-reach corners. Barbara Jacobs

World Bank to open global craft store

February 28th, 2006

The World Bank is planning to open a store this spring that will sell crafts from developing countries to help promote socially responsible trade — and help burnish its image in response to critics who say the agency does exactly the opposite.

The store, Pangea Artisan Market and Café, is to be in the downtown Washington headquarters of International Finance Corp., the branch of the World Bank that is overseeing the project. It will sell a variety of handmade merchandise such as banana-leaf handbags from Indonesia and silk pillowcases from Cambodia. Read more »
