Blaze destroys long-time furniture business

Almost 70 firefighters from throughout Habersham and Banks counties spent much of Wednesday night battling a fire at Hartford House Handcrafted Furniture in Anderson Village off Highway 365 near Alto.

Firefighters received the call shortly before 8 p.m., with the building 40-percent involved by flames upon fire department’s arrival, said Habersham County Interim Fire Chief Jeff Cain.

Water had to be shuttled from hydrants on the Demorest Water System because the Baldwin water lines serving the complex didn’t provide sufficient pressure to support the firefighting effort.

“The water situation was pitiful – absolutely pitiful,” said Cain on Thursday. “It was almost lack thereof.” Read more »

Celite workers preparing to strike March 1

After negotiating with Celite unsuccessfully for nearly two months, Chemical Workers union officials said Tuesday they will strike March 1 if no labor agreement is reached by Feb. 28 when the current contract expires.

A spokesman for Celite acknowledged that the company will exercise its right to remain open with replacement workers if union workers strike. The union represents 240 workers at the mining plant. Read more »

Furniture show has new name

The committee developing a replacement for the Western Design Conference has agreed on a name – “Cody High Style.”

“We wanted to make sure the new name clearly sets us apart from the former conference,” said Wally Reber, steering committee co-chair and Associate Director of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. “We wanted to include Cody in the name, not only for geography, but to capture the history, tradition and creative approach that characterizes the craftsmen of this area and the Rocky Mountains.”

After 14 years in Cody, the WDC recently was sold to a group of Jackson-area newspaper and magazine publishers. They will stage the event in Jackson in September. Read more »
