Baltic Furniture 2008

The 13th international exhibition of furniture and interior design, Baltic Furniture 2008, to be held on 2–5 October 2008 at the International Exhibition Centre in Kipsala, will feature the awarding of the Baltic Furniture Manufacturer Design Award 2008 in three categories: Industrial Design, Unique Design and Design Idea.

The aim of the Baltic Furniture Manufacturer Design Award 2008 competition is to highlight the achievements of the Baltic furniture manufacturers in the field of design, to foster development of furniture design and cooperation of furniture manufacturers with designers, to improve recognisability of manufacturers of industrial and unique furniture on domestic and international markets through boosting exports of furniture.

The competition is organised by the International Exhibition Company BT 1 and the association Latvijas Mēbeles (Latvian Furniture).

The Baltic Furniture Manufacturer Design Award 2008 may be contested by samples of furniture design developed in the period from October 2006 to October 2008 by Baltic furniture manufacturers, designers and students in furniture design. Competition entry may be an item already in production. The nomination Design Idea invites to participate free of charge students of educational programmes in design, designer groups and designers under 36 years of age from the Baltic States and other countries. Applications will be accepted by 15 September 2008 (more information at www.balticfurniture.net).

Competition entries will be judged on 2–3 October by a professional international jury consisting of Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian and Russian designers; Latvian, Russian and German journalists from leading interior magazines; teaching staff; furniture manufacturers and dealers.

The jury will judge competition entries according to aesthetic considerations, functionality and usability (ergonomics), technological solution, quality, market potential, innovation used in development.

Organisers of the exhibition will give a grand prix award to a product manufacturer and a prize to the best product manufacturer in each nomination.

Prizes will also be given and events covered by cooperation partners and information sponsors of the competition from Russian ELITE. Baltic Furniture 2008 exhibition with its accompanying activities and competitions will take place during the project Design Month in Riga managed by the Riga City Council. This project will feature various events and activities throughout the whole month of October in Riga.

The fair, Baltic Furniture 2008, is held by the International Exhibition Company BT 1 in cooperation with the association Latvijas MÄ“beles, Riga City Council, Latvian Designers’ Society, Baltic Architecture Centre, Latvian Investment and Development Agency and Estonia’s Wood Processing Association Eesti Puutööliit.

Cebu furniture makers wow Austria

The local government of Cebu was received warmly by Austrian traders who showed great interest in investing and importing furniture from the province.

Cebu officials led by Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia were in full force during their visit to Vienna last month to present the province’s unique furniture business to the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.

“I really make this a point na dadalhin ko ang ating furniture manufacturers to open more market for the Cebu furniture industry our furniture is a world class,” Garcia said.

Garcia’s group showed the audience the growing furniture industry in Cebu through a PowerPoint presentation.

“This is a business matching session for the Cebu delegation with Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industries, the counterpart here in Austria is the Austrian Federation,” said Cebu Board Member Wenceslao Gakit.

Aside from Austria, the officials said they are also set to visit other countries in Eastern Europe.

The group hopes to establish more connections in other European countries like Slovenia, Slovakia, Croatia and Germany.

Furniture can cut high ceilings down to size

Building trends have been incorporating high ceilings in many rooms in a home.

The feeling is majestic, but sometimes we run into problems with how to furnish such spacious spaces.

Common ceiling heights are anywhere from 12 to 22 feet. You wouldn’t want to put small-scale furniture in a room with such towering heights.

Many furniture manufacturers make large-scale pieces with higher-back sofas, fuller and more substantial looking upholstery, larger cocktail tables and bigger end tables. Read more »

Furniture Brands sells business furniture unit for $75 million

Clayton-based Furniture Brands International Inc. has found a buyer for its furniture.

The buyer – Muscatine, Iowa-based HNI Corp. – is the No. 2 global brand and office furniture is the largest American manufacturer of gas and wood-burning fireplaces.

$ 75 million sale of Hickory Business Furniture, expected to be completed by the end of this month, will provide an infusion of cash for Furniture Brands – the country’s No. 2-residential furniture manufacturer. The agreement will also enable the company to focus more closely on its residential brands, including Thomasville, Broyhill and Lane. Read more »

Singapore to increase share of world furniture market

Singapore’s share of world furniture export market is expected to increase to 2 percent by 2015 from the present 0.7 percent, a Singapore government minister said on Sunday.

The outlook for Singapore’s furniture industry is clearly optimistic and buoyant, said Singapore’s Information, Communications and the Arts Minister Lee Boon Yang at the opening of the international furniture fair Singapore 2008.

The fair is held in conjunction with the 25th furniture show of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),

“As furniture manufacturers, you must continue to sharpen your competitiveness to grow the business and win new market share. This is where having distinctive branding and strong design capability could make a huge difference to the future of Singapore’s furniture industry,” he said. Read more »

Making local furniture fashionable

THE furniture industry is not all that different from the fashion industry, based on what SJI Industries Sdn Bhd managing director Benny Poh said.

Furniture makers have to work a few seasons in advance like the fashion houses. And they also have to predict what will become the next big trend.

“Furniture is no longer just a piece of wood. It has now become like fashion,” Poh told StarBiz. “Thus you have to be competitive and avoid pitfalls by selling at lower prices.”

According to him, players should offer higher value-added products rather than compete on pricing.

Furniture makers plan for Pre-Market

A group of furniture manufacturers gathered in High Point this week to make plans for the next Pre-Market, scheduled for March 3-4.

Pre-market happens in between the twice-yearly High Point Market wholesale furniture trade shows, and gives buyers and sellers an opportunity to preview new introductions and make last-minute changes for the big shows.

During the past several years the future of Pre-Market has been uncertain with the opening of the rival Las Vegas Market, but last year a group of 16 manufacturing companies partnered to bring a new structure and formality to the event.

That group expanded to 25 manufacturers this year, according to Brian Casey, president of the High Point Market Authority, who serves as a spokesperson for the group. The Market Authority does not have a direct role in planning Pre-Market. Read more »
