The organiser of the seventh edition of the Malaysian Furniture Export Exhibition (Mafex) said the country’s first September furniture trade show will be held at the Mines Trade Centre.
DTC Channel chief executive officer, Hoe Kian Choon, said the company’s 10,000 sq m permanent showroom at the Mines Trade Centre will serve as an added visiting option to furniture importers when they fly in to buy living, dining, office, bedroom and children furniture at the annual furniture fairs in Kuala Lumpur.
DTC Channel (formerly known as Sunrise E-commerce Sdn Bhd) first announced that it was going to hold a second furniture bulk-buying season in a year at the opening of the seventh edition of the Mafex trade show last March. Read more »
Furniture exporters may become jobless as orders from main import markets are exhausted.
Wooden furniture export has been witnessing a continually high growth rate of over 60% since 2000; however, unexpected fluctuations in the world market are causing producers to suffer. Earlier this year, Khai Vy Company planned to export $50mil worth of furniture in 2005; the target was lowered to $45mil in the middle of the year, and one month ago it was lowered again to $40mil.
Director Doan Van Trang is concerned that it has reached that end, saying that political instability in the EU, Khai Vy’s main export market, has raised difficulties for many exporters.
France imports $10mil worth of outdoor furniture products from Khai Vy every year; however, orders are decreasing due to current political problems there. Carrefour, Khai Vy’s partner in France, which has a wide distribution network with hundreds of suppliers throughout the country, has also reduced orders. Read more »

Move over, Martha. Everywhere you turn, celebrity home designers are joining forces with budget-minded retailers to offer well-designed, affordable furniture and accessories.
Nate Berkus at Linens ’n Things, Chris Madden at J.C. Penney, Ty Pennington at Sears and Thomas O’Brien – who went from furnishing Giorgio Armani’s Manhattan digs to Target stores – are wooing shoppers hooked on hours of TV home-decorating shows and dozens of home magazines.
For millions of these newly sophisticated but cash-challenged consumers, interior design has become a favorite form of self-expression. In catering to their needs, retailers are reshaping the low-price end of the $75 billion home-furnishing industry, turning it from cheap to chic.
It’s all out there, ready to assemble, in varying degrees of quality, at prices most can afford. Everything from wastebaskets and night lights to sofas and dining tables has been re-imagined for the new art form of do-it-yourself decor.
The whole trend toward affordable design has been made possible by improved technology and reduced offshore production costs, which have helped drive prices down. Fully assembled furniture made in Asia today is 20 percent to 40 percent cheaper than when it was produced domestically five years ago, according to Britt Beemer, chairman of America’s Research Group. Refinishing demands skill, artistry
HYDE PARK — Gerald Thorpe’s job description is a throwback to days gone by.
No spending his work days sitting in front of a computer for him. Instead, the Staatsburg resident spends much of his time at work performing the grueling task of stripping furniture.
The craftsman, experienced in furniture stripping and refinishing as well as historic architectural stripping, owns TNT Furniture Strippers with his brother-in-law, Richard Tanner. Tanner specializes in color finishes and custom staining. The Hyde Park business is 28 years old.
“It’s a lost art. It’s hard work and you’re dealing with chemicals, hopefully properly, but it’s hard, body-beating work,” Thorpe said, adding, teasingly, that he suffers from carpal elbow syndrome from the physical aspect of the job.
But Thorpe thinks the duo’s efforts are appreciated. The 46-year-old said he thinks Americans are beginning to tire of society’s disposable mentality.
Thorpe said the popularity of furniture refinishing and restoration depends on the age of the consumer. Read more »
