“Tom and the Beam Global team have accomplished a great deal over the past several years to build our spirits business into one of the top four premium spirits companies in the world,” Carbonari said. “Notably, our spirits business doubled in size and elevated its portfolio with the acquisition of the Allied Domecq brands in 2005, and has begun simplifying and building its routes to market in the U.S. and globally. We appreciate Tom’s many contributions to Beam Global’s success and wish him all the best in the future.”

“The people of Beam Global can be proud of the significant progress we’ve made together,” said Flocco. “Now that we’ve successfully unwound our former partnership with V&S Group and defined the business’s new routes to market, I’ll step aside after six years with Beam Global and pursue new challenges. I leave Beam Global with the utmost confidence in the company’s brands, people and future possibilities.”

Flocco joined Fortune Brands in 1999 as senior vice president of strategy and corporate development, moved to the spirits unit in 2003 as chief operating officer, and became president and CEO of the spirits business in January of 2004.

Beam Global Spirits & Wine and the National Center For DWI Courts Commend Georgia DWI Courts

October 27th, 2008

Beam Global Spirits & Wine, Inc. [Fortune Brands, Inc.], a global leader in premium spirits, and the National Center for DWI Courts (NCDC) joined forces today to raise awareness about the effectiveness of DWI Courts in Georgia. With more than 17,000 alcohol-related traffic fatalities in the United States every year, Beam Global and NCDC have partnered together since 2007 to bring national attention to the effectiveness of DWI Courts in addressing hardcore drunk driving.

Hardcore drunk drivers are drivers with a high blood alcohol concentration of .15 and above and/or are repeat offenders. These drunk drivers are responsible for 58 percent of alcohol-related traffic fatalities and are 380 times more likely to be involved in a crash. Unfortunately, statistics demonstrate that conviction without treatment is not effective in addressing hardcore drunk driving.

The innovative DWI Court system deals with hardcore drunk driving offenders by providing long-term, ongoing accountability and rehabilitation, in addition to conviction. These courts have become the model for getting the most dangerous drunk drivers off our roads.

DWI Court judges, prosecutors and law enforcement officials assembled at the state capitol building to highlight the success of DWI Courts and their valuable contribution to the state of Georgia. NASCAR® driver and team owner, Robby Gordon, joined Beam Global in thanking Georgia judges, law enforcement and legislators for their support and to acknowledge the life-saving efforts of DWI Courts.

“Beam Global Spirits & Wine is committed to eliminating drunk driving,” said Matt Stanton, vice president of corporate affairs, Beam Global Spirits & Wine, Inc. “We support programs that reduce drunk driving and are committed to working with any state willing to help save lives by establishing DWI Courts. Preliminary research of Georgia DWI Courts shows that those who go through DWI Courts are 79 percent less likely than offenders who received traditional punishment to be re-arrested for a DWI charge. This is a powerful statistic and we encourage all states to join Georgia in the fight to eliminate hardcore drunk driving.”

DWI Courts Work

“DWI Courts are saving lives,” stated the Honorable Kent Lawrence, State Court of Athens-Clarke County, Athens, Georgia. “Georgia DWI Courts have proven that blending long-term treatment with the accountability, immediacy and certainty of court response is more effective than punishment alone. These courts truly promise better long-term outcomes and their success has changed the mindset of criminal justice professionals. Georgia is a powerful example of how effective these courts can be.”

“I am truly impressed with how successful DWI Courts have been in reducing drunk driving,” commented Robby Gordon who is in Atlanta for the NASCAR Pep Boys Auto 500. “I would like to offer my appreciation to Beam Global for supporting the National Center for DWI Courts and for including me in their efforts to help raise awareness for this life-saving program. I congratulate Georgia judges, law enforcement and legislators for their efforts throughout the state and encourage other states to follow Georgia’s lead.”

“We need to do all we can to keep our roads safe,” commented Robert F. Dallas, director, Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “High-risk impaired drivers are causing the vast majority of alcohol related traffic fatalities and this issue needs to be addressed. DWI Courts make our communities safer by reducing the incidence of drunk driving. They work because we address the problem at its roots by requiring treatment and accountability in an intensive, long-term program.”

Beam Global and the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) partnered in May 2007 to launch the National Center for DWI Courts, which focuses solely on hardcore and repeat drunk driving offenders. Beam Global is now in its second year working with NCDC to help raise awareness about the effectiveness of DWI Courts. Currently, there are 445 DWI Courts across the country, with 13 established in Georgia.

About The National Association for Drug Professionals:

The National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP), a not-for-profit organization, was founded in 1994 by a group of visionaries to reduce the negative social impact of substance abuse, crime, and recidivism by:

* promoting and advocating for the establishment and funding of drug courts, DWI courts and other problem-solving courts;
* providing for the collection and dissemination of information;
* providing training, technical assistance and mutual support to courts nationwide.

Within its short 14-year history, NADCP has become the premier national training and advocacy organization for over 2,100 drug and DWI courts nationally by:

* serving as the only national organization representing over 19,000 multi-disciplinary drug court professionals before federal and state lawmakers;
* annually hosting approximately 130 court training and technical assistance events that have benefited thousands of court practitioners;
* writing, publishing, and disseminating scholastic and practical publications that are critical to the ongoing growth and fidelity of the drug court model; and
* creating a vision of a reformed criminal justice system by impacting policy and legislation.

Macef – 85th Edition of The International Home Show

September 2nd, 2008

Completeness and the widest of ranges, made in Italy, World Silver Show, artistic craftsmanship, Italian classics, costume jewellery and fashion accessories, leading importers: these are what give originality and diversity to Macef, The International Home Show, which is gearing up for its 85th edition from 5 to 8 September at fieramilano. The strategic axis of the show revolves around the concept of specificity, exalting the aspects that make the Milan show original and different to its main international competitors.

Who is the Milan fair, visited by more than seventy-five thousand distribution business professionals during the September edition (76, 904 recorded in September 2007), aimed at?

“Macef has three strategic pivots – says Sandro Bicocchi, Fiera Milano International’s Managing Director – orientation towards the sales point, the “spirit of everyday living” and everything to do with “gifts”. The first aspect signals the fact that Macef is the place a great number of professionals turn to find out about trends in life styles (innovative products, shapes and colours, but also market and consumer patterns and sales techniques). The world of gifts is mainly evident at the September edition, when the core of the exhibition consists of ideas for products that will be put on sale for Christmas.”

“What we define as the “spirit of everyday living” – continues Bicocchi – is Macef’s ability to represent a real market, offering beautiful, useful and truly saleable products to all players. Products that people will actually buy and that we find at home and in daily life. And this is where it is diametrically opposed to some highly visible fairs that that propose futuristic ideas and intriguing but improbable prototypes. The companies who turn to Macef ask us to be even more of a marketplace, a place for effective exchanges and business. And this explains why Macef – which is an extremely attractive show which could easily be a big draw – remains reserved for the trade and closed to the public.”

The Italian market for products for the home and gift articles is starting to recover after a period of stagnation. The reasons for this recovery are the Italian consumer’s renewed interest in beautiful, useful products and above all, the new-found courage of producers who have finally understood that vigorous promotion campaigns to support sales are not only necessary but indispensable also when it comes to basic products (such as those for the domestic sphere). This is now happening – including taking advantage of trade fairs and the whole range of opportunities they can provide – and seems to point to interesting developments. Macef is perfectly integrated into this system, indeed it is one of the main reference and meeting points for dynamic manufacturers and the more aware distributors. Co-marketing activities, missions abroad and projects for communication between the show and its main exhibitors are increasingly frequent.

The events also align with this idea of utility – starting with the Village Shop project, the consolidated union between Macef and the association Art, Arti della Tavola e del Regalo (Art, Table and Gift Arts). Some important table brands will be present collectively in a large area of 1, 500 square metres in Hall 5. The companies are present at Macef Gennaio in force for reasons of fair format and timing of purchases and, in any case, they have no intention of losing contact with the visitor also at the September appointment, traditionally dedicated to retailers interested in the gift and decoration area. In addition, in synergy with Macef, Art has started numerous promotional occasions aimed at retailers of household objects – training courses for the point of sale managed by Casastile/Il Sole 24 Ore Business Media, the editorial initiative Bon Vivre with an exceptional partner like Edizioni Condè Nast and also initiatives directed at the final customer through the search engine Webmobili.

September will see another edition of Art&Flowers, the event dedicated to flower arranging, which as well as suggesting new ideas for decorating the home with flowers, also proposes creative pairing with some of Macef’s most characteristic products. The show will also see the return of Best of Ornamenta, the competition designed to emphasize the commercial and marketing value of costume jewellery. It is worth remembering that what Macef defines as the “personal area” (that is, costume jewellery and fashion accessories, gold, jewellery and silver articles to wear) now covers more than 20 thousand square metres net of exhibition space. For this reason, the “personal area” will be the subject of a competition, with a holiday in a exotic location as the prize.

In addition, all the most appreciated hospitality facilities will once more be available: “progetto Sud” – which brings operators from the central-southern regions to Milan with discounted travel packages; the Buyers’ Club and the exclusive “ways to innovation” project consisting of targeted meetings where innovative companies present their most interesting prototypes to major buyers for pre-selection at commercial level. The interactive web site, which provides periodic newsletters targeted at various categories and where entry tickets can be bought at a discount, has also been upgraded and is now available in no less than nine languages: as well as Italian, it is in English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese and Arabic

Amish Furniture Gallery, Handcrafted furniture at new Batavia store not all rustic

January 24th, 2008

At Amish Furniture Gallery’s new 16,000 square foot store in Batavia, store manager Brian Zerm told me there are 61 different styles of tables on display. One in particular caught my eye: a tabletop of cherry wood with hickory log legs. The matching chairs had cherry wood seats and hickory log chair backs and legs. It was gorgeous, rustic, and heavy. “Here, lift one. See how it dents the carpet,” said Zerm.

“People are surprised when they come into the store for the first time,” said Zerm. “Many people think we have only rustic and country. But we have Shaker, Mission, Arts/crafts and contemporary styling as well. People tell me they’ve been looking for a dining room set for two years. They come in here and find two or three right off. For just a little more than something made in China, people can have heirloom quality. It’ll last forever.” Read more »
