What’s the best way to ship some VERY special antique furniture pieces from FL to TN?

May 28th, 2009

Antique Furniture
My grandmother recently passed away. She has a solid oak trunk and a desk (both antique) at my aunt’s house in Florida. These pieces are very special to me emotionally and could never be replaced. However I am a very poor graduate student! How can I best get them here (Tennessee) from there (Florida)?

We do not know the weight of these items but I know they are solid and will weigh a lot.

Waiting is not an option. If I don’t get them now, I may never get them.

Thank you guys!!! :)

I have a 3 piece french provencial set. A couch and 2 wing chairs. The 2 chairs are in good to very good condition. The larger wingback chair has some small rips in the upholstery (courtesy of my 4 year old) which are covered by the armrest protectors. The smaller chair could use some minor touch up on the exposed wood.Structurally all are excellent. I am wondering what to list this set for. If someone wanted to reapolser this set what would they pay?

I inherited a collection of hand made antique furniture in original paint from my Dad. How should I sell it?

May 28th, 2009

Antique Furniture
My father died in 1997. He was an antique dealer in the Maryland/DC area for years, and upon his death I inherited a collection of antique furniture, mostly 150 – 200 years old, all in the “original painted finish”. Most of the furniture is colorful, and it all looks well-used, but from what I’m told, that fact simply makes this type of furntirue more desireable to collectors.

I’m currently in the midst of what’s going to be an ugly divorce, and I’m having to use all available sources of funds, so it’s time to sell Dad’s stuff.

Any advice on how to go about doing that? What’s the best way to proceed?

Anybody know any contacts in Mississippi?

Is it safe to store valuable antique furniture in an attic?

May 27th, 2009

Antique Furniture
I have a lot of furniture in very fine condition from the late 19th century. Is it safe to store it in my attic? To my knowledge, there are no animals up there, but would the cold/heat damage it? I am in NJ and an uninsulated attic will see a wide range of temperatures.
