How to remove a cable lock from a Dell Computer?

May 30th, 2009 Category Computer Furniture

Computer Furniture I am stupid and forgot my combination to the lock on my laptop. It is the cable lock that you secure to a piece of furniture. Can the cabinet of the computer be opened to dislodge the lock so I can buy a new lock? I am walking around with a cable hanging from my computer and it looks like I stole it! Any ideas?

I used to work for a cable lock company and most of the locks are crap. So the easiest way to get one out is just to jerk it out hard. We used to have our sales people do this to show customers how crappy the competitors locks are. If it is a Kensington, this might not work, however, since they have a patent on the technology which holds the lock in the slot (They invented the slot and the lock). They also license this patent and design to Targus. So if your lock is not one of them, jerk it out hard. I have done this on a laptop of my own and it worked. Do it like you mean it.
