furniture S.L. asked:

I am getting a mahogany 4 poster, full-sized bed along with matching dresser and night stand from my mom and I want to put it in my daughter’s room, she’s 3, how can I make it fun and girly, all the design mags have all white furniture in girls’ rooms. Any pictures you can share or other tips?

You can easily incorporate antiques into any room, even a little girl’s room. At the same time, you’ll be teaching your daughter about heritage as well as giving her something she can cherish and pass on down to her child. Those things are so much more important than giving her a room pretty much anyone can find in a store or magazine. Here are some ideas that come to mind to keep the room little girl-like and maybe even turn it into a fairy princess room :)

    1. Using soft colored tulle to match the colors of her room, wind tulle with either soft white fairy lights or flowering vines around the posters. Consider what a great night light this will make. I would have liked to find a better picture but this will sort of give you an idea of what I mean:. Consider adding ribbons. It doesn’t have to be this elaborate, but this will give you an idea of what can be done if you think about it.

    2. Place her favorite stuffed animal friends on her bed in amongst a fun bed of cushions that match the colors in the room. Make sure the bedding is bedding for a young girl. I don’t suggest real kiddie bedding (read: Tinkerbell), but do stay with girl-themed bedding: flowers, soft pastel colors with maybe a bright and vibrant color in there. Either opt for a vintage look:
or go completely modern (modern and antiques make a wonderful mix!):

    3. Consider changing the drawerpulls and other handles on the furniture. Don’t throw away the original stuff, just put it in a safe place. But opt to add something little-girl-like instead. What I mean is something like this::

    4. Whatever you do, keep the rest of the room light and airy. Consider adding a floor lamp if there isn’t already one in the room.

    5. Add a really cute funky rug for when your daughter hops out of bed. Match the other colors of the room.

    6. Consider adding a vase of over-sized flowers to the room in matching colors.=&h=213&w=218&sz=34&hl=fr&start=13&tbnid=7RFQx-xidSslnM:&tbnh=105&tbnw=107&prev=/images%3Fq%3Doversize%2Bfake%2Bflowers%26hl%3Dfr

Whatever you decide, I’m sure your daughter will have a great room! You go, Mom… give your daughter a room she can grow in. Never mind the white stuff… it’s just a phase that will change with the times. Antiques never fade away :)

Feel free to email me, if you have any other questions. And hey, Happy New Year!

It must be a large room I hope and is it going to be shared by both as your little girl will grow and need more space than at this present time in life.

Just because the fashion mags have all white at this present time. Colour scheme change from season to season with them as next year it will be pink or blue.

Nothing wrong with going all out in antique look. Like match the whole room in say Edwardian or Gothic look what ever as children’s rooms can be adapted that way. I nice old fashion rocking horse and dolls house wouldn’t go astray. Nice sturdy children table and chairs with a Queen Ann bed and dresser to match bringing out the beautiful wood grain would look nice.

Anyway have a Happy New Year.

Since the furniture is dark and heavy lighten the room up with a light colour on the walls, curtains, and bedding…that it will be younger looking for your daughter..what ever you add for her…play table or toy box I would keep in the same era as your furniture to keep the continuity throughout the room.

If you paint that gorgeous furniture you will regret it the rest of your life,
clean it up and polish it.
Then look through cataloges of girly frilly girls canopy and bedskirt, bedspread that is filled and tuffed scalloped or laced , lots of shams, different pillows and cute dolls on the top. A little step stool on the side, The night stand having the same material as a topping with a beautiful lamp shade matching the colors picked small little dolls on the nightstand. On this dresser have two lamps on each end and have a mirror behind it. Have it decorated with a hair brush, comb, set and a small baby picture in a mahogany frame with ribbon and a pair of her special baby shoes showing from baby, to toddler to young lady.
Be sure to have a rocking chair in their for the young Miss and have the same window dressings as the bedskirt or comforter. Place a soft adn cuddly throw on the left edge of the bed.

Be sure to place some more mahogany frames of pictures on two more walls to complete the picture of a Young Ladies Abode. Be sure to do up her closet that when its open you would think an interior designer started there and carried it into the room. It works. honest.

    Simply shy.
