Will doggie nails poke holes in leather furniture?

I’m thinking of getting some new living room furniture soon but I have two small Chihuahuas, which have sharp little nails. Will they put holes in leather sofas or chairs? I do have their nails clipped every month, but I really want leather which would be a lot easier to keep the doggie hair under control because they could be wiped down everyday.

if you let them walk on the furniture a lot, or if they tend to jump off a lot, it can sometimes wear down the leather, or even put holes in it, which was the case with my cat.

Try little boots for them they are availabe at Petsmart….or you could always use baby socks?

yes they will poke holes in it…..u could just put a blanket over a cloth couch and it will be like the same thing except u have 2 wash the blanket

They will poke holes in the furniture. You might think of getting a doggy gate, or covering your furniture.

As long as you keep their grooming up, the little doggy nails will do no harm! Take care, and give those little ones a hug for me!

Probably, unless the leather is really thick. Get the pup’s nails cut, or go to a petcare store (PetCo or PetSmart should have them) and buy clippers and do it yourself!

If your dogs nails are clipped regularly and aren’t very sharp then you should have no worries about buying leather furniture as long as your dogs dont’ claw at it. I hope this helped your decision!

We have two small dogs, a miniature schnauzer (18 lbs) and a Lhasa apso (13 lbs), we have had only leather furniture (1 set is soft leather, the other is stiffer) in our house for 8 years or so without problems.
I had the same concerns as you at the start, but I am a firm believer in leather couches now.
Both dogs jumped on the furniture…but the sofas are in great shape all these years later.

Yes. I have two cats and one dog, I too went for a nice leather sofa and love-seat set in order to avoid the problem with pet fur collecting on them, I also purchased a warranty at the advice of the salesperson so I could get my furniture repaired if they did happen to put holes in them. There are cuts and rips all over them, we tried teaching the cats not to sit on the furniture, but it was necessary for them to jump on the sofa in order to look out the window (there’s no way you can teach a cat to not look out the window), and we’d be kidding ourselves if we didn’t think that they weren’t on the furniture when we were gone or asleep. And after two weeks of trying and finally getting hold of a customer service rep about our warranty, we find out that only “tears” are covered, not rips and scratches. So unless if your pups never ever go on the furniture, I’d say look into something else.

clip their nails or keep them off the furniture.

Depending upon the regularity of their nail growth (some dogs produce faster growing nails than others) and their digging habits, dogs as small as yours are still likely to damage the leather. I had one and she was always on the back of the couch barking at something out the livingroom window. Her barking nearly knocked her off her perch, as they are particularly vigorous in their activities, and she would dig in with her nails and attempt to regain her foothold, scrambling back to the top. If you really desire a leather anything, put it where the dogs are not likely to be on it at all; although being part of the reason you wanted it, that may not be your best solution. You may want to start out with a vinyl beanbag chair to test what will work. If they don’t poke it with their nails, great, go for it. But if they do, then you are out only a couple of bills, rather than hundreds of dollars.

Yes they can. Especially if the dogs nails are really sharp and the leather is thin. Even thick leather can get holes, your dog might chew on it, too.
