High Point furniture designer John Black creates pieces inspired by the great furniture of the 18th and 19th centuries but with the scale, proportion, function and finish aimed at today’s lifestyle. He usually includes some surprises as well.

“There seems to be a resurgence in interest in classical pieces,” said Brigette Breitenbach, a spokeswoman for Councill in Denton.

This spring Councill added 30 pieces and two new finishes to Pendulum by Councill, the eclectic line by Black that debuted last fall.

The Vinafera Cabinet is a 17th-century Baroque-inspired bar cabinet of pimento burl veneer with a fully mirrored back, adjustable glass shelf and interior LED lighting that reflects off the high-sheen, light-brown finish. The cabinet, with highly decorative drawers, folding doors and custom hardware, perches atop dark-finished legs carved from a single piece of mahogany.

The Pompei Cocktail Table features a marble inset top over a fluted, Italian-style base that can be custom-decorated by Councill’s craftsmen.
