Outdoor furniture is light as a feather
August 21st, 2007 Category Furniture, Outdoor FurnitureCreating patio furniture is a new business venture for Bruce Greer. For nearly 40 years, he has labored over landscape as a landscape designer.
“I don’t have to sweat as much,” smiles Greer. “And, I get to work in an air conditioned place.”
Another plus, not only is he still designing, this work is not as hard on his back.
“You can certainly pick this up,” says Greer, lifting his outdoor furniture with ease!
Most patio furniture, especially stone, is heavy and difficult to move.
“The jaw generally sort of drops down,” says Greer, describing the general reaction to his works of art.
Then again, Greer’s creations are anything but typical.
“It’s actually E.P.S foam… what most people call Styrofoam,” says Greer.
The Styrofoam extends from the structure to the trim.
“Last year, I built a stone sofa for a landscape client. It came out nice,” says Greer. “All of a sudden, a little light went on inside my head, and said this would be really great if I could make it lightweight and shippable.”
He started experimenting, and developed the finished patio product.
“The furniture?s Styrofoam, the tables are Styrofoam, the wall columns are Styrofoam,” describes Greer.
The patio furniture is all lightweight, anywhere from 15 to 120 pounds, giving the company its name, “Featherlyte Lightweight Outdoor Furniture.” From Tuscan to Rustic, the pieces are custom made, and according to Greer, extremely durable!
“I’ve had three, 300 pound Miami Dolphins sit on our sofas down at a trade show in Florida,” says Greer. “They didn’t budge it!”
So, how does he make the Styrofoam so sturdy?
“This is the magic,” explains Greer, holding a sample of his Styrofoam product. “This is the inside of our products, basic Styrofoam. You’ll see it in insulated coolers or a coffee cup. The difference in this product is our hard coat.”
Basically, the hard coat is made from polyurea.
“You can’t bend it. You could beat it with a baseball bat,” says Greer. “That’s what makes our furniture tough.”
It is not only water and fire proof, the Styrofoam outdoor furniture is also ultra violet resistant. It has had even Greer resting a little easier.
“I’ve had a lot of other dreams,” admits Greer. “This is one that really came to fruition!”
Greer does have a patent for his patio invention. Even though Featherlyte Lightweight Outdoor Furniture has been in the area since April, it will officially open in two weeks.
