Nostalgia rules at furniture show

April 13th, 2007 Category Events, Furniture

Another Shanghai expo and it’s Furniture this time, which has long been a unassuming heirloom in many families. With children, parents and grandparents living under one roof, pieces are simply passed on to sons and daughters within the household, enriched by the wear and tear from each succeeding generation. But if you’re not lucky enough to inherit pieces, why not buy them?

It is the sense of history and intimacy that has earned these furniture pieces, on display at the Shanghai International Furniture Expo, the attention of potential buyers.

Some of them are old enough to qualify as “antique ” - making them highly desirable items on the collectors’ lists.

Not everyone can afford the price of a wooden settee dating back to the Qing Dynasty. But for most visitors, the appeal of old furniture, like this leather-bound trunk, or this wicker basket, comes from the stories or ideas associated with them.

Though they may be humble in origin, they bear witness to the generations of lives gone by and allow those who carry them again into their own homes, to feel their own place in history.
