Handicraft exporters urge govt to resolve packaging material crisis
February 19th, 2007 Category HandicraftThe members of Banglacraft, involved in handicraft exporting, have urged the government as well as concerned authorities to take necessary steps for finding out alternatives to resolve their packaging material crisis, said a press release.
The release said, as a packaging material polythene bag is very essential for handicraft exporting. But due to restriction, imposed by government on manufacturing and marketing of polythene, exporting of handicrafts is in acute crisis.
The BGMEA members and other big exporters of the country have the opportunity to import their packaging materials by back-to-back L/C.
But the L/Cs against the export orders of handicrafts, issued by foreign buyers, are usually very small in amount. These small L/Cs cannot be used as back-to-back L/Cs, for import of poly-bags from outside the country.
On the other hand, local poly-bag manufacturing factories are closed for long.
As a result, the country’s handicraft exporters can neither import their necessary packaging materials nor collect them from local market.
As such, the members of the Banglacraft, who have been playing an important role in earning foreign currency, are facing serious problem, and export of handicrafts is also declining day by day, the release added.
