Customers Wait for Furniture Refunds
The showroom is still full of furniture but the doors are staying closed at the Ashley Furniture Homestore in the Waikele Shopping Center. The only explanation for now is from a recording customers get when calling the store.
“Due to unfortunate economic circumstances, we are disappointed to inform you that Ashley store is going out of business and is closing its doors Nov. 10.”
Some customers who’ve already paid for their merchandise, such as Tyray Daniels, have been waiting weeks for delivery or a refund. He had no idea the company was in financial trouble.
“I’ve just been getting letters saying it’s not here yet, it’s en route, it’s en route,” Daniels says, “so I just took it as a delay and then I’m told their doors are closed and I’m like, ‘are you kidding me?’”
The recording gives several numbers to call but it’s been a frustrating process.
“We start calling the numbers that they gave us,” says Parris Kawaauhau. “And they numbers referred us to another number to another number. They keep referring and referring.”
KGMB9 has learned the company is offering credit to cash-paying customers with undelivered orders. But Stephen Levins, Executive Director of the Office of Consumer Protection says customers should get a full refund.
“If you go in and put money in for furniture or car or any merchandise and the company is unable to provide the merchandise, you should get your money back.”
According to Ashley Furniture, customers should get a letter in the mail soon about their options. The store is also planning a forced liquidation in a couple of weeks.
In the meantime, customers should file a report with the Office of Consumer Protection. You can call 587-3222 to get a form and remember to attach any receipts or supporting documents you may have.
