Local furniture dealer leads regional group
July 31st, 2006 Category FurnitureAlexander “Sandy†Bryant of Orangeburg Furniture Exchange became the president of Southern Home Furnishings Association at the organization’s recent annual meeting in Williamsburg, VA.
Bryant will serve as SHFA’s president until June 2007, when he will become executive committee chairman.
Bryant has served on the board of the organization and its executive committee for more than a decade.
Bryant’s father, Douglas R. Bryant, Sr. purchased Culler Trading Co. in 1947 and changed the name to Orangeburg Furniture Exchange.
The young Bryant came to work in the family business in 1958 after graduating from the University of South Carolina, where he met his wife, the former Caroline Elizabeth Kelley, originally from Olanta.
In 1970, Sandy, his father and his brother, Douglas Jr. formed a partnership.
After the death of Douglas Bryant Sr., Sandy and his brother incorporated and moved the store to their current Middleton Street location.
In 1986, Sandy Bryant became the sole owner of Orangeburg Furniture Exchange.
Bryant is a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he has served as a member of the board of deacons, chairperson of the Property Committee, and Sunday school superintendent.
He has been the chairman of the Budget Committee for the United Way of Orangeburg.
Southern Home Furnishings Association is an affiliate of the National Home Furnishings Association in High Point, N.C. NHFA, founded in 1920, is considered one of the nation’s largest organizations devoted specifically to the needs and interest of home furnishings retailers.
