Brashears Furniture planning location in south Springdale

Another furniture store could be moving to south Springdale.

Brashears Furniture Co. in Berryville has made an offer on the building at 4900 S. Thompson St., the former site of Bynum Home Furnishings. Owner Doug Brashears hoped to close on the property today and possibly open the new location in early 2007.

“ It’s a market that’s already significant to us, and this was an opportunity that presented itself, ” Brashears said. “ The real estate was right for us. We weren’t necessarily pursuing the opportunity, but it opened up for us. ”

Brashears Furniture Co. dates back to 1935, when Vol and Ida Nell Brashears opened a hardwood company in Berryville. The business expanded into a general store by the 1950 s before eventually refocusing on furniture.

Two locations currently make up the company — a 70, 000-square-foot store in Berryville and a 12, 000-square-foot showroom in Branson, Mo.

The building under contract in Springdale was built in 1985. It offers about 29, 000 square feet of space.

Once open, the new location will focus on medium and upper-medium goods, Brashears said.

The new store will increase the company’s locations to three, but Brashears said it was a growth plan that will be taken a step at a time.

“ Instead of depending on them to drive an hour and a half (to Berryville ), it makes sense for us to have a presence over there, ” he said.
