Berne furniture maker to invest $3.8 million, create 104 jobs
April 30th, 2006 Category FurnitureAn Adams County furniture maker announced plans Friday to invest $3.8 million in an expansion that will create 104 new jobs.
Smith Brothers of Berne, founded 80 years ago, crafts residential furniture known for its high quality. The company, which employs about 200 full time, recorded $27 million in sales last year.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. and the city of Berne have combined to offer Smith Brothers incentives to keep the project in the state.
The IEDC’s offer includes up to $190,000 in training grants and up to $2.28 million in tax credits based on anticipated employment can capital investment levels, the state said in a news release.
“Indiana continues to build the very best environment for economic development,†said Michael S. Maurer, Secretary of Commerce and IEDC president. “As the rest of the world realizes Indiana is open for business, other companies like Smith Brothers will see Indiana as an ideal location for additional growth and expansion.â€
