German discount furniture retailer Plus, part of Tengelmann Group, is mulling the launch of a Bulgarian business as part of its strategy for expansion into Eastern and South-eastern Europe, Plus spokesperson Nicole Dinter confirmed for Dnevnik.

Plus is thus poised to become Bulgaria’s first discount furniture chain.
Tengelmann’s managers have unveiled plans to open 1,000 new outlets outside Germany by 2010, focusing on Eastern Europe, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported recently.
In Romania, where Plus debuted last November, the company intends to open 120 shops by 2010.

According to Handelsblatt, discount retailers view the Balkans - Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia in particular, as their ’secret trump card’.

In 2005 alone Plus cut the ribbon for 330 new outlets across Europe. Its business outside Germany generates 25% of turnover and the company’s goal is to boost this share to 40%.
