Furniture by Consignment opens on Hubbell Ave.

February 23rd, 2006

There is a new spot for people in the market for inexpensive furniture — Furniture by Consignment, 4330 Hubbell Ave.

Best known for its first store on Hickman Road, Furniture by Consignment, about half the size of the Hickman store, offers low prices on new and used furniture. The new store has approximately 1,300-square-feet of retail space.

“We buy a little cheaper so we can sell a little cheaper,” said store manager Scott Rich. “No matter where you sit (economically), you will be able to find something here.”
“We have everything from bedroom sets and baby cribs to sectionals … from designer (on down). Factory closeouts, discontinued items, good products, they’re just at the end of their run.”
Furniture by Consignment, which is open Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., opened officially for business Feb. 15. They are closed on Sundays.

New items will come in regularly to the store.

“What consignment people do is bring their stuff in and sell it,” Rich said. “As long as it’s decent and good and clean.”
“We have a buyer who goes out and does our shopping. Or if you’ve got a couch or something to sell, bring it in, stick it in the front door and we can work out the details there,” he said.

Wood crates make really great recycle bins for newspapers.

Shutters or doors can be hinged together to make perfect room dividers.

What is Modern Furniture ?

February 22nd, 2006

Generally speaking, modern furniture refers to furniture from the latter half of the 20th century and on into contemporary styles. The term is sometimes referred to as “mod” or spelled “moderne” to better distinguish it. Often, amongst designers, they might define the term “modern” furniture more narrowly to refer to items produced by US manufacturers in the 50s and 60s.

The emergence of modern furniture represents one of the lesser-known consequences of World War II. It ushered in a new era in furniture design. Modern living not only required a chrome-plated gas guzzler, a washing machine, fridge/freezer and similar household appliances but also modern-looking living space.

Comfortable, affordable, and stylish furniture was desired. Mass production (and the innovation of foam upholstery for seating and sleeping furniture) ensured affordability and furniture designers supplied the other attributes, thanks to the advent of new synthetic building materials, like vinyl and tubular metal. This development, coupled with monochromatic color schemes, integrated modular elements with multiple uses, featuring curvilinear shapes, transformed domestic living rooms..

It was designers, such as Herman Miller, Florence Knoll Bassett, Hans Knoll, and Charles and Ray Eames, that bestrode the era of modern furniture. They favored innovations such as pedestal tables, modular sofas, sleek sideboards, shiny stools in place of chairs.. Vinyl replaced leather; bright prints superseded dark brocades; unadorned acrylic and plywood was employed instead of hardwood, and tubular steel instead of wrought iron. Read more »

How to choose your garden furniture and make it last

February 22nd, 2006

Garden furniture is now a fashion item as the patio and garden increasingly become an additional functional space to the home.

Before you buy any garden furniture it is strongly recommended that you do some research. Doing so will greatly increase your chances of buying garden furniture that is right for you and will last you a long time. Following are some important tips you need to consider before you buy.

Firstly decide whether you want stackable or foldaway furniture that will be put away in the shed or garage in winter or if you want permanent solid garden furniture that remains in situ all year round. If you want your garden furniture to be a permanent part of your garden for esthetic reasons then it is recommended that you go for heavy furniture made from hardwood, aluminum or wrought iron with rust proofing. It is well worth spending the money on the heavier more durable materials as this will be much more cost effective in the long run.

Choosing the right type of material and construction is paramount. Decide what kind of material for your garden furniture would best compliment your patio or garden. Select a material that will stay in balance with your garden. Read more »
