Child Welfare League of America Honors Jordan’s Furniture as Corporate Friend of Children

Jordan’s Furniture was selected because since 1998 they have been engaged in helping children in foster care in Massachusetts find loving and permanent adoptive homes.
Shay Bilchik, CWLA’s President & CEO, said, “We are very pleased to present this Corporate Friend of Children award to Jordan’s Furniture. In today’s business setting, Jordan’s philosophy of corporate social responsibility and commitment to children is especially refreshing.”
The award will be presented to Jordan’s Furniture on February 28, 2006 at CWLA’s 86th Anniversary Gala Dinner, to be held during CWLA’s National Conference in Washington, DC. The conference annually attracts nearly 1,500 child advocates, representatives from Capitol Hill, national child-serving organizations, foster parents, and child welfare professionals from across the country. Bright House Networks of Brandon, FL will also receive a Corporate Friend of Children award. That same evening, UniSource Energy Corporation of Tucson, AZ will receive this year’s Corporate Advocate of the Year award.
Nominated by the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE), Jordan’s contributions have ranged from sponsoring adoption television specials to hosting adoption parties and appreciation events for social workers. Jordan’s has also been a catalyst for systemic changes in adoption in Massachusetts. A direct result of Jordan’s efforts is a shift in practice in which social workers are sharing information with each other about waiting children and families across the state rather than solely in local agencies. Jordan’s is credited with helping to place over 100 children with adoptive families.
“Since our partnership began with MARE in 1997, our initiatives have helped to find homes for so many wonderful children in Massachusetts,” says Jordan’s President and CEO Eliot Tatelman. “This successful track record keeps us going. Knowing that there are so many more children in foster care looking for permanent loving families is a great incentive for us to continue with our efforts and strengthen our partnership with the adoption and foster care community.”
Criteria used by CWLA in the selection of the awardees include: personnel and management policies that promote the well- being of its employees; giving and philanthropic activities that benefit children, youth, and families outside the family; corporate products that are not harmful to children and families or their physical and cultural environment; and a sustained pattern of national, state, or local activities that benefit children, families, and the community.
