Learn how to buy furniture the right way
February 27th, 2006 Category Furniture, TipsIf you’re looking at that three-year-old sofa, wishing you had had the foresight to buy more comfortable cushions and a stronger frame, you’re not alone.
According to the American Home Furnishings Alliance in High Point, N.C., approximately six out of 10 consumers wish they could repurchase at least one piece of furniture simply because they feel they didn’t buy it right the first time.
But following a few simple rules can help.
• Ask if a piece is solid wood or wood with wood veneers.
• Look for solid, kiln-dried hardwood.
• Pull drawers out and look for dovetail construction. This strong, stable-locking joint is machined and glued to last for generations.
• Ask if mortise-and-tenon case construction is glued and reinforced with metal fasteners.
• Look for corner blocks under seats that are not only glued in place, but screwed, nailed or stapled, to prevent the frame from twisting.
• Ask if the furniture doors have panel-and-frame construction to prevent warping.
• Avoid stapled wood joinery.
• When buying for longevity, avoid anything with a printed surface or made from fiberboard. Avoid rubber wood.
• Ask why there is a difference in price and what makes the piece worth the extra money.
• Veneers are used on flat surfaces to add weight, strength and durability, and to match the grain on large pieces.
