History
Thomasville celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2004. In a way, every piece of furniture we make is descended from a single chair. In fact, when the company was founded in 1904, it sold just one product, and operated under a name that proudly proclaimed it — Thomasville Chair. “The Chair†became so well-known that a 30-foot replica of it was erected in the town square, and Thomasville, North Carolina became known as “The Chair Town of the South.â€
Thomasville’s early growth and expansion is credited to two local timber farmers, T.J. and C.F. Finch. Reluctantly accepting company stock as payment for their timber, the Finch brothers decided to buyout other shareholders and undertake company management. Through their astute guidance, sales topped $1 million by 1917, and Thomasville became known for innovations in design as well as for manufacturing quality.
During World War II, life changed dramatically for the company, as it did for so many. Almost 600 men from Thomasville entered the service, more than a quarter of its workforce. But the contribution to the war effort hardly ended there. Thomasville also produced a great variety of war matériel, including Army bunk beds, plywood for gliders and planes, wooden plugs for bombs, and rolling pins and spatulas for the soldiers’ mess.
Throughout its history, Thomasville has been a major innovator in the furniture industry: the first to make complete living room and bedroom suites; the first to employ professional designers; and a pioneer in ensuring the quality and craftsmanship of every piece of furniture it builds. Along the way, of course, Thomasville has become synonymous with some of the most popular furniture lines in America. From the rich mahogany groups of the 1940s to the pecan and blond suites of the sixties to the elegant Humphrey Bogart™ and Ernest Hemingway® collections that grace the showrooms today
